DS Has a Concussion

June 24th, 2012 at 02:52 am

I haven't been blogging for the past few days because my son got a concussion on Thursday at school. He was hit in the head from behind twice by another student and the school, particularly the principal, has been a nightmare to deal with. There was a lot of gross negligence on their part. He sat in the office for an hour before we were even called and no one bothered to check his head (which had a bump) or him for signs of concussion, though he was clearly exhibiting them. Once we had medical proof from the doctor in hand and gave it to him he has ceased communications with us. Honestly I think he is trying to cover his butt at this point.

We contact the superintendent of schools on Monday. I am just glad the school year is now over. DS will likely be homeschooled this fall. At least that is his decision at the moment. We told him he can wait until the end of August to decide, though. I won't send him back into that environment unless there has been some real changes in attitude and behavior by the administration.

Oh Robin, what an awful thing for you all to go through! DS having a concussion is bad enough without the school failing so miserably to handle the injury properly.

I hope DS is recovering nicely.

That's awful! My DD1 has had 2....one at a soccer game where another player hooked her around the neck and yanked her to the ground because dd beat her to the ball and they didn't even call a foul! The school not communicating with you is just terrible! I wonder if they have stopped talking because they fear a lawsuit due to the way they handled it? Maybe a little "heat" and they will change their attitude! Hope your DS recovers soon!

Time to lawyer up & possibly file a police report for child negligence against the school admin.

Sue for ALL expenses including what PRIVATE school tuition will be when you transfer him for all remaining years at that grade level + all medical & legal costs. Get idea what possible future medical issues might be in the offing & insist on payment for that too.

All the current info out there on results of concussions 20, 30....years down the road is VERY scary.

What about contacting the parents of the kid for your medical expenses?

How is your son? Has he recovered from the concussion? Are you seeing any symptoms? Does anyone at the school's office have training to identify concussion?

How does the boy describe the incident? Was anger instrumental? Was it primarily teen boy behavior? Does he interpret it as a bullying situation? Has he regularly been targeted?

I don't particularly want to sue. I want an apology, both to us for how we were treated and to our child for what was done to him, and I want a change in policy so that this never happens to another child. Any head injury should be treated seriously And I want this on the principal's record. I doubt they will remove him from his position. I don't want to hurt an entire school or district because of the idiocy of the office staff. Of course if I don't get my apology we will be consulting with a personal injury lawyer to see about recovering medical costs and legal costs. DS might still need an MRI and that's $1000 I would want reimbursed, plus any additional medical costs.

As for the other child, he's just twelve. I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt that he simply lost his temper. He needs counseling and perhaps behavioral therapy, but not us bankrupting his family. He lost his mom not too long ago so I think there are extenuating circumstances.

    Yikes!
I'm glad to read in your other post that he is feeling better.

Wow! That is simply untenable how the school is reacting to this. I hope that they wisen up soon and that your DS gets better quickly. Frown
