Where Did the Last Month Go?
July 5th, 2025 at 04:42 amHappy Independence Day to all my lovely American readers. We have 50 minutes until we make the long and arduous trek to the end of the driveway to watch the blast over the bay. Best seats in the house even if we are a mile away, the view is still one of the best in the city due to our position on the hill.
It's been a long month of progress on building our garden, cleaning up the yard of general mess and taking care of a huge area of overgrowth, taking stuff to the dump every weekend. Then we've had the pleasure of watching as the bathroom renovation has gone along every weekday. It is looking beautiful and I am so happy with it.
The walls are painted a lovely shade of light greenish blue called River Mist. It compliments both the floor and wall tiles in the bathroom itself and then the two side walls in the shower. The long, back wall of the shower is a different tile and we love it so much.
We are waiting 2 to 3 weeks on the shower floor tile, because I changed my mind on it, so we will have box of pebble tile we won't be using. I tried walking on it before he put it in and oh, my gosh, it hurt so bad, my hips and back were in instant pain. I am so glad I thought to try it, because it was excruciating. My feet didn't like it either. And since the grout doesn't go all the way to the top and pebbles we chose were rounded, not flat, that isn't going to go away.
So we decided to just go with more of the bathroom floor/wall tile/shower wall tile that wasn't the accent wall tile which is very comforable to walk on. We didn't have anymore of that, though, and of course there wasn't any in stock, so he had to order more and even though the website says as soon as one week, he was told between 2 to 3 weeks, so we are expecting 3 weeks.
The floating cabinet and sink will be going in next week, on Monday, I think. That sink is the first thing I picked out for the bathroom and the only thing I fully insisted on having. Fortunately, my son loved it to death and it goes really well with the sea theme he wanted. It is a vessel sink and kind of looks like an ocean wave. It is gorgeous. The backsplash is going to be tile from the accent wall of the shower, so we will get our sea theme there as well.
We haven't been able to find shelving that we like except one that is so expensive I can't even fathom paying that much for one shelf, let alone four. So I decided to look at wood and I stumbled upon something called project wood in oak, which is so much cheaper, and comes in varying lengths and I can get it in the height and width I want, too, which I really couldn't with the shelving, so we are going to use that and brackets that we found and stain two of them the same color as the bathroom counter top (which will also have a waterproof coating of something, I forget what he called it). The we will stain the other two white. The white ones will have black brackets that scoop around the front of the shelves and the black ones will have white brackets. We will alternate the colors of the shelves.
We are still waiting on the bathroom door as well, which is really why we are alternating the shelf colors. My son wants to paint the door black and white. It will have inset panels, so we can paint the panels black and the part that goes around them white and do black trim around the door, or we can do the reverse and have white trim. He doesn't really want white trim in the bathroom because then there would have to be white trim on the floor and ceiling, too, or it would look weird. He hates white trim because it shows dirt really fast. I think black trim will look weird on the ceiling and floors, but since this will primarly be the bathroom used by him, I've given him a lot of say in the design of this bathroom. Plus, he will inherit this house from us one day, so I'm okay with it. He originally wanted to paint the door just black and that was a firm no. There is some black in the blue of the floor tiles, but not much, so while black is a good color for the bathroom, I think a fully black door is just too overwhelming.
I'm not sure when the toilet is going in. We got a black toilet, but it will have a white toilet seat because both my husband has to use a bariatric toilet seat and we haven't been able to find one that is black. But it will go with the black and white of everything else. I still have to check with my son about all of the hardware, though. The sink faucet and door handles and hooks are black for sure, but the towel bar, towel holders and toilet paper holder can be white. I'll see what he says or if he just wants to go all black for those.
I found some decorations on etsy, sea horses, fish, star fish, etc., that would be good wall art, but I need to see how everything lays out with the hardware, before I buy anything. These are expensive wall sculpture type art and I don't want to shell out (ha ha) for anything until I know how much room I will have for any of it.
We may be able to use it as a sink and toilet, by the end of next week because we still have the old door in place, which will be nice and then we'll have to pause for the new door install and when the shower floor tiles go in. It's looking like we will definitely be finished by the end of July and so far are only a little over budget. So yay.
I have more to talk about, but I need to eat dinner. Maybe after the fireworks.
