In Search of...

I need a new blender. The motor on my blender burned up right when I was in the middle of making homemade mayo for the first time. So of course we couldn't get it to emulsify and ended up wasting a cup of oil and a duck egg. Or well, we would have, but I threw some honey into it and a little store bought mayo and am using it as the dressing on coleslaw. I will try again in the future, but obviously not until we get a new blender.

So, this is the second Oster I've had that has had the motor burn up after using it for less than a year. And this one was maybe used 20 times. That's all. So no more Oster for me. Can anyone recommend a good blender that lasts and doesn't try to catch the house on fire? I'm just looking for a place to start my research.

I'm using a Better Homes & Garden blender that I got at Wal-Mart. It is sturdy and does a good job.

It's an investment, but we got a refurbished Vitamix for about $200 nearly ten years ago, and it's still going strong.

I'm sorry your Oster blenders keep dying on you! We have one of the Osterizer Classic behive blenders that is similar to this:

I bought it as a birthday present for DH from about 7 years ago, and it is still going strong. We love it. We make smoothies at least twice a week in it (with ice), and in the summer we use it for 3-4 batches of gazpacho each week.

Maybe trying a different type of Oster blender? Or maybe the quality has just deteriorated since we bought ours?

Sorry, I just checked my blog for when I purchased the Vitamix, and it was actually $400. We got it in early 2008, so we've had it about 7 years. We love it! And if the motor overheats it just shuts off; you can start it again when it cools off.

I have been thinking about getting the Vitamix, it is just so expensive. It is what my mother uses and she's been happy with it. I'd have to save up for it for a few months, though.

I have used and abused my Ninja blender nearly daily for three years making smoothies and it is still going strong. Bought it for $50 I think at Target.
