Gambling

April 30th, 2006 at 06:31 am

Gambling scares the living daylights out of me. I think if I were ever to start I'd never find my way back out again. I don't even like stopping at the reservation casino to use the facilities when the kids can't make it all the way home. I see all these people that seem like they are chained to slot machines and card tables. I don't even buy lotto tickets. Never have in my life.

DH has bought lotto tickets a couple of times but he pretty much avoids it, too. Well, today in the newspaper they had a coupon page for 2 free scratch tickets and 2 free lotto tickets, no strings attatched, unless you count the possibility of a gambling addiction rearing its ugly head.

Okay, maybe I am a little overboard about this whole fear of gambling, but I'm not even sure if I shoud try to use these tickets. It seems irrational not to use free coupons for free tickets. Then again, since my uncle was shot to death for cheating in a poker game when I was 3, maybe its just as well that I am irrational about it. I suppose I can just hand them to DH and have him decide what to do with them when he gets home, take the whole thing out of my hands.

Shot to death for poker in this day and age. I was shocked but then my husband just reminded me that a man in town last week was convicted of the same thing. It sounds so Cowboy Western 1850's. Gambling is scary. I see senior citizens doing this and I worry. How can they afford it?

They prolly can't, gambling is like drink, bad in excess, not so great in moderation, but then I have a husband who is making money doing it......

When I go to our local store, either to cash the monthly check or to buy groceries, I see people all the time buying and cashing in lotto tickets. Worse, I have seen mothers with young children allowing their kids to buy lotto tickets which they hand to their parents. What a waste of money!! These are almost always the same parents that I see at the end of the month in the stores whining about how broke they are and how they can't even afford to buy their children a small pack of gum or a 50 cent coke. Not to mention even, what bad values and ideas they are teaching their children.

And I'd be willing to wager that a lot of these same parents have higher incomes and manage more money than I do each month. Yet out of only $98 a month I manage to get the family household supplies(laundry soap, toothpaste, etc), give my children their allowances, set an amount aside for extra expenses, and still save. Anyone besides me see something terribly wrong with this picture?

The one that gets me the most is when someone buy a scratch ticket, stands at the counter and scratches it off, wins $5, buys five more tickets, lather, rinse, repeat over and over until they don't win anything. I woud have walked away with the $5. Or at least I'd like to think I would.
