Yuck...I Had to Buy a New Purse Today

October 14th, 2008 at 09:14 am

I hate shopping for purses. It sucks. I am not a twenty purse kind of girl. I am a one purse kind of girl. Give me a good, solid purse with lots of slots for cards and photos so I can avoid carrying a wallet, and a nice old shoulder strap so it can go around my neck and across my body for maximum usage of my hands (a must with kids) and I'm happy. If I can find it in some shade of red or burgandy I'm even more happy, but that's not a deal breaker.

The shoulder strap came off my old purse, the leather tore right through. I was pretty bummed because I've already repaired it twice with heavy duty thread and needle, and my stitches always hold but the leather keeps tearing. And I don't overload my purse, so I think it's just bad quality craftmanship, even though the rest of it is perfectly fine and still even looks new. It was only a $5 purse though, so I figure two repairs is all I'm giving it. It'll make a good travel toiletry bag now because of its shape, so I'm giving it a new life rather than just throw it out.

Anyway, the new purse does meet the qualifications of lots of slots and enough compartments to hold things in the places I want them held and not require a wallet. It's not red though. *pouts* Still, it's black and perfectly serviceable. And it cost less than $18 with tax. I tugged hard on the straps to make sure they were strong. It's not leather, which I usually like to get, but again, it's not a deal breaker.

I just wish Penney's hadn't stopped carrying the really good purse that I liked. It would last a good two years without falling apart and then I'd buy a new one in a slighty different shade of red. They had them for ten years and the last two times I had to replace a purse they didn't have that style anymore even though they still carry the same brand. *pouts harder*

I also added money to the coin jar today.

$20.62 starting balance
$04.18 added amount
-------
$24.80 ending balance

I'm well on track for saving $30 for the month this way.

lol - i always keep my old purses too! so it looks like i have a lot, but i only use one. i've had mine for about a year and a bit and it's getting a bit daggy too - it's starting to tear a little in places and get worn out. mine is a metallic blue Smile

Sounds like you are like me. I hate to get new purses. I would much rather find a nice, well made one and have it for years and years. I just had to replace my old purse a month or two ago. I believe I had it for at least 4 years. It was not broken but it was getting really ratty looking so I broke down and bought a new one. The one I had before that I had at least 5 years and re-sewed the strap at least 2 times (kiddos pulling on Mom's purse strap tend to do them in). I better be able to use this current one for at least 3 years.

I have a ridiculously expensive black leather handbag by Coach (purchased three children ago). I can say that is the one expensive item that has been purposeful and useful and held up well. Once that one is gone though it is highly unlikely I will own another one.

I hate purse shopping along with shoe shopping. Actually my last 2 purses I did not buy. My current is a Michael Kors large bag my girls got me for Christmas. I would never buy that expensive of a bag, but is is nice and big and hold lots of stuff including a college bound notebook, my knitting, a water bottle, etc!

I just bought an almost new one from the thrift. Cost $3.

Chocolate brown saddle bag style, classic. This is the shape and size I want to carry.
(Hillard and Hanson brand, remind me who are they?)Slightly smaller than my last pouchy one.

But drat, will NOT fit everything. No more carrying the check book, the very small (eyeglass size) make up pouch, no more kids toys, no more hand lotion.

I don't mind shopping for purses, but only use one at a time.

The only problem is I almost always lose something each change over cause it's all in new spots and forget where I put things ARGHH

Oh I always thought it was just me! Hate purse shopping with a passion!! You do need a place for your stuff though. Unfortunately, I just switched styles for summer and like the new style. I'll be needing a new one for winter I guess.

Do you have an old medal chain belt that you no longer wear? I have a bag that I bought from Sears years ago.
Like yours the strap was beyond repair,a little light went on, applied a chain belt and voila, purse as good as new. That maybe going too far.

Ann--The bit that pulled out of the purse is where the strap connects to the purse itself so there is nowhere to hook a metal belt to. I would have, given the choice, because I do have one.

Everyone--It's nice to know I am not alone in my purse shopping loathing. *grins*

Its funny - I like purse shopping, but I hate other types of clothing shopping. Shopping for jeans? Ugh. Shopping for a coat? Loath it. Shopping for a swim suit? Run screaming. (and that's just the clerk) Shopping for shoes? Sigh. Shopping for socks? Boring.

I guess its because I don't have to try on a purse (take off old clothes, put on new ones, get disgusted) in the usual sense.

The only issue with the purse is that somehow the stuff either doesn't fit or is too big or it slips off the shoulder as I walk. But right now I have at least 6 purses or carryalls... so no shopping until I wear them out.

    Baselle--

I pretty much hate shopping of any sort other than for groceries (which I enjoy if the kids aren't with me) or for books. I think it's the whole time consuming process. I like to hit and run shop, get in, find what I need and get out again.

I just got a new one from American Eagle--the bucket bag. It's got a nice handle and very durable. It is made of khaki material and it doesn't show dirt at all. I ordered it online and wasn't expecting it to be so big. It's 15" long, 8" wide. I haven't put everything in there yet, but it holds at least 10 water bottles plus everything else. *smile* I hope this one works out for you, LuckyRobin.
