One Thing I Didn't Miss About School...

August 4th, 2014 at 08:08 am

...was all the fees. With one kid starting as a freshman and one kid going back to complete her senior year I get to pay twice the fees. So far it is going to cost $80 for two ASB cards and $100 for two year books. If we wait until second semester to buy the year books it will be $130.

But starting off with $180 before even buying school supplies and clothes annoys me greatly. Maybe I will just do the ASB cards to start and see if I can postpone the yearbooks until next month.

I won't be doing school photos. Too expensive, no choices, and if they turn out bad there's no recourse unless the kid had his eyes shut. I'd rather take them to the mall were you get several choices to choose from if I want photos like that.

Not looking forward to packing sandwiches again or having to pay for deli meat. Still, in my physical condition, I just cannot homeschool this year, so it is what it is. /vent

What is an ASB card? I registered my freshman and senior and paid $130 to register. There will be more miscellaneous fees. I know they will both have an art supply fee of about $10 each. One year book gets ordered in the fall, the other in the spring. We will do the basic package of photos for the freshman and a simple senior package (if there is such a thing).

My grandson's kindergarten picture was so bad it was scary, and he is a very cute kid!

In the digital age I find buying pictures, at all, to be fairly worthless. But, yeah, the school pictures are particularly terrible. We certainly do not buy them.

As a teacher, I can tell you that picture day isn't a favorite for us either. Kids come to school dressed nicely and you want to make sure that isn't a day you take them outside before photos or do anything that can get them dirty. Then they are antsy because it is a change in a schedule. Some kids are upset because they don't get pictures and then there are parents who after the photos come back, are displeased. I've even had parents call and inform me I should pay for the packet so their kid gets them.

What is the point of year books? Are they ever looked at again?

I looked at my elementary++ yearbooks many times over the years ... until they were destroyed in a mini-flood in my storage unit 4 years ago. Frown
