In a Much Better Mood Today

September 4th, 2011 at 05:25 pm

I've been Mrs. Crankypants around here for the last couple of days. Today it was nice to wake up with a smile and not a fever (though I am still really stuffy). We're going out to work on the house today. MIL said she would watch the kids. DH is going to mow while I use the weed eater on the flower bed and then dig out the roots of some plants, then we will put the chairs down in the back of the van and load a bunch of boxes into it to take to storage. House is almost empty now so hopefully we can fit it all in the van. We have a lot of newspaper and cardboard to recycle. DH has to check with a neighbor to see if they want any kindling. We have given away all of our big pieces of wood, but we've got boxes of super dry kindling that need to go as well.

It's going to be a long day of working hard but I think we can get a lot done. We will pick up school supplies for DS on the way out to MIL's house. DD won't actually get what she needs because each teacher gives her an individual list (joy) so first day she just needs a notepad and pencil. Which means shopping again on Wednesday night.

Glad you are feeling better; hope the stuffiness subsides and you have a good day.

Glad you are feeling better, but I'm responding to your question asking retire@50 what the paleo/primal diet is. I'm still at the gym - my current trainer suggested it to me. The diet "rules" are pretty straightforward but they fly completely in the face of conventional diet wisdom.

What you should eat if you are in weight loss mode: meat & fish (any cut and don't worry about the fat); fat - most fats are fine but olive oil is best (butter is fine); eggs; avocado; nuts except peanuts; any vegetable in any quantity except limit the starchy ones such as potatoes/corn; dark chocolate within reason; light on the fruit and berries are best. Water, coffee, tea, unsweetened iced tea for drinking.

Get out in the sun a bit, get plenty of sleep.

What you should avoid: sugar, whole grains, pasta, bread, dairy (again, butter is fine), beans/peas/legumes, starchy vegetables like potatoes and corn, peanuts, processed foods, corn and canola oil, anything that says "low fat".

There's also the 80/20 rule. If you are on point 80% of the time, fantastic. If gramma is pushing a baked good on you, accept gracefully, consider it the 20%, eat it and move on.

If you are tired and cranky, eat more fat.

I'm currently pursuing it - I lost about 5 lbs quickly on it and I'm plateauing a bit. The diet is surprisingly easy for me to follow.

It doesn't sound too different from another diet I had been on in the past that worked really well. Sweets have never been my problem but those potatoes and that sweet corn is the hardest thing in the world to give up. Especially now and in season. But I've done it before and I can do it again.

Yeah, I miss sweet corn! Might want to consider the fresh in-season sweet corn as the strategic 20%. Smile
