Bed Fix

August 20th, 2007 at 05:07 am

DH and I spent a good portion of today repairing one of the boxsprings to our King size bed. It took some doing but we finally got it done and back in place and flipped and rotated the mattress and I can feel a huge difference already just sitting here on the bed. I also vacummed the boxsprings and mattress while we had the bed torn apart. Wow, there was a lot of dust there.

We need to buy a new bed pretty soon. This fix will probably allow it to last up to another year, but it is well past its warranty and I think it is part of the problem I have been having with my hip.

So DH and I are going to start researching beds. He's all for the sleep number bed but I'm not so sure. It's air pockets and to me that means they can pop, so what good is that? Does anyone have any experience with a sleep number bed? I'd be interested to know.

I found 39 cents under the boxspring when we took it out so I added that to the coin jar. Today was also a no spend day.

This is just one guy's opinion, but I'm not personally too fond it of the sleep number....

You really can't spoon. If one person rolls over to the next person's, it'll change their "sleep number" until you go back to your side.

There's an invisible barrier down the middle. If you land on it, you can feel yourself sink into it. So, rather than rolling where you feel natural, you are aware of this invisible barrier, and stay on your perspective sides.

It's an air mattress. Granted it's a very good one, but for the amount of money they want... well, it had better be! As such, it also comes with all the limitations of air mattresses. For example, ours eventually developed a leak (which when you think about it, won't take much). But by then it wasn't much of a problem since, you know, we were divorced....

It's also surprisingly uncomfortable. I'm not entirely sure why, but my ex and I had to buy egg crates to pad it on top of the padding that comes with the mattress. Then, it slept good.

For that amount of money, may I recommend also looking into memory foam? My currently mattress is that. It's very consistent, which is quite important to sleep well. Whatever it is that you guys decide, I highly recommend to try them all out first.

But again, this is just one man's opinion. Big Grin

I have the sleep number bed - we like it very much, but DH and I are of similar sleep numbers, so we can spoon all right and don't have BA's issue. Big Grin We also got it with an adjustable foundation and massage.

Our main problem with ours is that we seem to go through air pumps, which maintain the air pressure thus have to work. (I suspect the massage function and the pump don't play well with others) A pump failure feels like a leak, but they aren't really. Our previous bed was a waterbed, so leaky air is clean and nice and doesn't cause mold! The bed has a 10 year warranty, so we call select comfort and we get a new a pump without charge.

The nice thing about the waterbed was the heating and cooling effect of the water. During the winter, the bed was always toasty, due to the warm water. Summers in Tucson we would shut off the water heater and it would be nice and cool. The one thing I miss. Terrible back support on a waterbed, though. Great back support on the sleep number bed.

We looked into memory foam and temperpedics, but they trap body heat much too well. DH sleeps hot (and now I'm starting to also) - just by sleeping around on the beds, the temperpedic turned clammy very quickly. FYI, if you go that way, your chiropractor might get you a deal.

Again, fall asleep on them first.
