An Idea that Never Occurred to Me

I found these today:

http://www.bagthehabit.com/shop_bags and I thought that was one of the niftiest and most frugal ideas I've seen in a long time. I mean, I've been using reusable grocery bags for years, but I never even thought about reusable produce bags. We buy a lot of produce and I end up bringing a lot of plastic into the house that way.

I mean, I avoid it where I can. You'll never see me put bananas or onions in a plastic bag. Garlic goes bagless. If I'm only buying one fruit, like a canteloupe, I don't put it in a bag. But other things will get damaged if not protected, like lettuce, and some things are too difficult to manage. It's one thing if you have two onions to not bag them. Twelve potatoes on the other hand can be an issue and will irritate the heck out of the checkers, I'm sure!

So with part of my June allowance I am going to send for some of these and try them out. I've found several different companies that make them, I just liked these ones because they came in pretty colors and not just white.

Hmm. Would those actually prolong the life of the produce? I doubt it.

Debbie Meyer produce bags do, and can be had at the dollar store in packages of 10.

I used the reusable produce bags. Many things I leave out of a bag all together, too! Those colored ones are nice and but still see through for the cashier.

Frugal--No, they wouldn't prolong the life of the produce. They are meant to transport the produce home, not to store it in. You then transfer it to your permanent reusable containers at home. As for Debbie Meyer bags, they have never worked for me. The reusable container set by that brand does, but the bags didn't and they were horrible to try to clean. I ended up having to toss them out. Money down the drain.

Ah, I see. Hmm. So I guess it keeps them from knocking around a bit more. Eh, no thanks. Not for 20 buckeroos!

There are many that cost less, but they are plain and white. I just liked the pretty colors, which of course are more expensive for no really good reason. But the point is to stop using a non-renewable resource. I think these would be very easy to make for someone who was handy with a sewing machine at far less cost. Really all you'd have to do is sew a straight hem and insert some heavy duty cording at the top to make the drawstring.
