The Sound of Music...

...or should I say the cost of it? We finally got the piano moved from the old house to this house. It cost $220 to have professionals transport it 25 miles. There was snow out at the old house, but not enough to hinder moving it.

Now we have to let it set for at least six weeks before we tune it. One of the black keys broke off, but I think it can be glued back on or replaced. One of the white keys doesn't strike the string anymore so that will have to be fixed as well. I'm not sure what that will run, but it'll likely be around $100.

It's not too badly out of tune, but it definitely needs to be tuned. It's been a few years. My son has happily been picking away at it all afternoon. He has missed it a lot. So have I for that matter. I love our piano. It was made in 1912, so it's 100 years old now, but is still plays beautifully. And it was free from a family member, so we've only ever put moving costs and tuning costs into it. It's definitely a good investment for all the joy it brings.

Is it an upright or a grand/baby grand? I love the look of musical instruments, even if i don't play much. I grew up with a baby grand in the house that took up most of the small living room. You'd bump into the piano bunch when you squeezed in the front door. My step father was a pianist, taught piano at NYU and was also our church organist. He also taught me how to play.

My dad is keeping my upright piano for me until I have a chance/funds to have it moved here. It was purchased when I was in third grade for $600, and my brother, mother and I all used it over the years. He was going to sell it if no body wanted it - so I told him I do want it, just have no place for it right now. (or money to afford it being moved here/tuned)

It is a Cable-Nelson Cabinet Grand Piano (but it's not really a grand piano, just made to sound like one as closely as possible). It is considered to be the best of the upright pianos made in that time period, with the fullest bodied sound.

Ah, pianos can be such a pain. I've got a Grand and an upright. They hold their tune well which means I am very lazy on that front. My parents have the upright, but it is basically mine. It just popped into my head that I should probably tune that piano, too. Had never really thought about it, but has been sitting at their house for 10 years and I don't get the feeling it has been tuned since I moved it there. Our Grand doesn't seem to really need to be tuned, but it is something I know is long overdue. Like, maybe I should do it once every 5 years, anyway. It's more of a "it sounds great so why bother" thing than a cheap thing.

Anyway, that upright we have is phenomenal. Which I suppose is why we bought it. I never expected to have the room to store a Grand Piano. Both were free to me - but I just got lucky my sister moved to the East coast (so the Grand defaulted to me). & that my mom is a softie. (My dad wanted me to pay $10k for the Grand - I said, "No Thanks!" So I never really expected it and was shocked when they gave it to me. I could have found something similar for less, but appreciate that I got that piano because it was a really good one. & you can't beat FREE).

Oh, both were bought used of course. & it is nice to be able to hand down within the family.

MM--I would love to have a real grand piano some day, but I definitely don't want to have to pay for it, or at least I don't want to have to pay that much for it.
