I Want a Vacation

August 16th, 2018 at 09:27 pm

I figured it out earlier this week and it has been 8 years since we have taken a vacation. The last few years would have been impossible with debt and the farm animals, but now all we have are the rabbits, so the possibility exists that DH and I could sneak away for a few days at some point while DS takes care of the rabbits. I just want to go check into some air-conditioned hotel with an indoor swimming pool and get out of the heat and the horrific air quality from all the fires.

But I really can't justify it at the moment, because of debt. I am really hoping this will be paid off by next summer and then maybe we can go. Also, with DD's health still being so poor, I'd be afraid to leave her. It's just been so exhausting dealing with it and never getting the chance to recharge.

I don't know, maybe DH and I can just do a day trip with a picnic lunch. We could drive up to Birch Bay and go swimming. I just want one day with no responsibilities and no kids. But with the air being so bad, spending a day outside probably isn't the best option anyway. My asthma is already being aggravated.

How do you refresh and relax when you can't get away? I can't really afford a massage or a day spa or anything like that right now. Maybe a movie, but there's nothing worth paying that kind of money for right now. *sighs*

Well, back to canning. I'm doing my first tomatoes today. No vacations for me.

When I feel overwhelmed, I hit the library. Its quiet, and I can just relax, browse and usually take a few books or movies home for free. I love looking at the big 'coffee table' type books with art, history or places to visit- and I love the organizing and cook book sections.

I hear you about the air and asthma...I have spent all non working hours in doors for weeks. Its so frustrating. We have free movies in the park here, but thats def out of the question for me.

I hope you can find something relaxing to do to recharge...its so important to do that occasionally. XO to you!

Could you do an at home spa? Essential oils in the air and in some warm water for a foot bath/full body bath. Maybe hubby could rub your feet. Put relaxing music on. Dim the lights or put up white Christmas lights. If holed up in your room together maybe play cards or just visit for awhile without distractions. You might also consider a caregiver for your DD if needed. All caregivers need respite.

I enjoy getting out in nature usually for relaxation, but I probably would avoid if air quality was bad, too.

Not that this helps, but you aren't alone....sigh.....we have just incurred MAJOR vet bills and aren't going anywhere for a LONG time. I also have the same air quality issues because of all the wildfires in No Cal - my throat is killing me constantly, it is
    miserable!!!

I do love the library idea from Thrifty Ray - it is a great place to just relax - just don't snore too loud if you fall asleep Smile We don't even go to the movies anymore, I just request them from the library now - can't beat FREE!!!

Any museums locally that are reasonable or free? The library idea is a good one. One of my favorite places.

I have a favorite little coffee shop by the Delaware River that is about a 12-mile drive. When I want to get the feeling of getting away w/o much travel or time, I'll spend a weekend morning there sitting by the river. But that's outside (although they have indoor seating too). For me, watching water is really soothing--anywhere you can go where there's a view of a lake or river if not the ocean?

You are always so disciplined. I’d encourage you to do it, at least for a couple days! A few hundred bucks spent on yourself every 8 years isn’t going to make or break you, but self care can be immensely important. Just my 2 cents.
