Slowest DMV in the West

I took my son to get his learner's permit. We spent 2 and a 1/2 hours there. He had already taken his written test two days ago, so that was just wait time to actually get the actual permit. And it wasn't even a temporary permit, it was just a piece of paper saying he had permission to drive until his permit comes in the mail. Well, actually for 45 days, but regardless, they didn't have to use the special printer for it like they do with temp ID's and licenses, so it was kind of ridiculous to have to sit for 30 minutes after having his photo taken for a simple print out.

He also registered for the draft while we were there. That took like 2 seconds. I thought he didn't have to register until he turned 18, but I guess they want you to register before you turn 18 and on that day you can be called up if necessary. Happy Birthday, kid, you're going to war. As a mother, I really hope it never comes to that. He is the last of his entire line to carry on the family name on his dad's side, too, so if something happened to him during a drafted war, it ends with him.

So anyway, we spent $25 at the DMV and my hip is all messed up from sitting on those hard plastic chairs. I have an ice pack on it and took a muscle relaxant and hopefully it'll be gone by morning. After that I had physical therapy, which really hurt because of the chairs. So that was $60 as it wasn't a longer session, just a shorter one.

My mother's shoulder surgery is on the 6th, but her time got moved. Same day, but she needs to be there at 9 a.m. instead of 6:30 a.m. So that is a blessing, because I don't function well before 8. It's only a few blocks' drive, but she's not to walk it because they don't want the high amount of pollen getting on her and contaminating things.

So I can let the birds out then drive her up, drop her off, and get back in time to go turn on the rabbit fans if it is hot and refill water bottles and feeders. She doesn't want anyone to stay with her, which is usual. It makes her more anxious, not less. I'll see her the next day. She said not to come in that night as she'll be too drugged up and doesn't want her sleep interrupted.

It looks like she might get two nights in the hospital which would be the best thing for both of us. She'd have more time to recover with full care and I'd not have to run myself ragged until she was more easy to care for. I really wish she had scheduled this for when DH is home. Then he could help out with some of the care.

    That rivals the Louisiana DMV. I once went, took a number, sat down, waited three hours. They didn't make it up to my number before closing time, so they just closed for the day! I waited all day for nothing and had to come back!!

    I once had to wait most of a whole day at a DMV in Indiana. Did you see Zootopia and their depiction of DMV employees? Hilarious!

    That sounds like my experience when I first moved to Nebraska and had to switch everything over. That took a good 3+ hours.

    DMV wait time is ridiculous. I'm sorry it bothered your hip. I didn't even know kids had to register for the draft.

    Your Dmv wait time was way too long. Also, I hope that your Mom's shoulder surgery goes smoothly,and she has a quick recovery. When my son signed up for selective service, he did it @ the post office. There is no draft ,and the signing up also helps supposedly, with applying for student loans. The military is all volunteer,but in the last few wars such as Iraq and Afghanistan ,too many of the same military personnel had to do repested tours, and multiple deployments. My son is in the military,and for him it is a good fit. After college he decided to join the Navy. He has been to some tough places,and some lovely places. He is my only child, so I definitely worryabout him, like many military families do. I try not to think about negative thoughts, and what if. I feel that no news is good news.He tells me not to worry, thay won't call, it's only bad if they come to the door. He thinks that if he jokes, I won't worry. Sorry to get off topic, But the military is definitely all volunteer. And he does airplanes,that's all I can say. I am very proud of him, but I do worry,and I have to say the military has been a good life for him, it's a huge commitment and not for everyone. He is begin. , his tenth year of service. When he joined he was a really young new officer. I pray for him and all the military and their families every night, and I am not an overly religious person, it helps me to feel better. I totally understand taht you wouldn't want anything to happen to your son. I hope all is well with your family. pls evscuse any typos.

    Yikes, that is a long time at the DMV!

    My hairdresser tipped me off a few years ago as to which one of the local DMV offices has shorter lines. I felt so lucky! That is a horrible wait time you had.

    Congratulations to your son on receiving his license. I'm also praying that there aren't any wars in that he maybe drafted, I hate wars. Also I hope you're feeling better

    Joanne--I know the military is all volunteer for the moment. But that can change in a heartbeat. Congress can reinstate it at any time which is why boys still have to register before their 18th birthday. The guy at the desk called it the draft. It's faster to type than selective service. I hope your son stays safe or as safe as he can be under his circumstances.

    I found out the DMV in Mt. Vernon is almost always deserted, so I think the next time we have to go we'll do the 30 minute drive there, combining it with a trip to the feed mills. Much less time spent overall.

    Joanne--Yes, pretty patriotic and very supportive of our military. I've got a nephew in the Army.
