A New Path

March 5th, 2013 at 05:19 am

I picked up my first rabbit hutch today and the guy is going to make me two more tomorrow. They cost $85 each. It's an expense that will eventually pay for itself. We love rabbit meat so it is going to be worth it. I am glad we had set aside some of the money from our tax return. I guess we are really going to do this.

We'll go to the rabbitry on Saturday to get our New Zealand whites. It's a big step, but I think it will be just as positive as raising poultry has been. It's a big step on our path to sustainable living.

I also spent $38.52 at the grocery store today. Paleo is a bit more expensive than even the lower carb diet I was on before, but I feel the benefits so much more, too, so I guess that's okay.

are you familiar with joel salatin? i visited his farm way back in the mid-90s (i managed an organic market garden at the time and was taking a two-week permaculture course in Virginia) and saw his very interesting chickens and rabbits housing set up. i believe the rabbits were on top with the chickens underneath (believe the chickens cleaned up after the rabbits). his son made quite a nice living raising and selling the rabbit meat, and joel, of course, had a great business of selling the chicken meat and eggs (also raised pork and beef). when you find your dream house with land, are you considering selling some of your meat or will you only raise enough for your family? people are always looking for good local well-raised meat. i live in an area where people sell their own extra eggs and chicken meat. oh - i just remembered your farm blog and see that you are already considering selling your eggs/produce once you move to a new place - cool!!

Yes, I know about Joel. I've been reading him for the last year or so. Yes, I think we may consider it when we move to a farm. It depends on how many hoops we might have to jump through. I'm not a particular fan of hoop-jumping.
