On Taxes

February 13th, 2012 at 12:34 am

So if you efile your taxes how is the question of signatures handled? DH didn't get the taxes done so he is thinking of just doing them while up at work and efiling even if we have to pay a bit to efile. I'm assuming you don't need a signature with efiling? Is that so? Because he wouldn't have mine for the return obviously if he is doing it from Alaska.

If I remember correctly, last year when I filed using TurboTax they had us enter some number from the previous year's tax return. Something like "Enter the value from line 50 from your 2010 tax return."

There is a form you sign to keep with your records, is all (nothing to submit to the IRS, for signature). So, he can e-file them.

I've efiled our for years without DH's signature. Your husband can easily efile.

I just filed about 30 minutes ago. You fill in one of two things to replace the signature:

    1. an e-pin. The tax prep software leads you to the IRS site, the IRS asks for SSN, exact name, exact address. When IRS finds you, they give you digits that you fill in.
    2. you put in the AGI of last year's form.

I've done it both ways. I used choice 1 this year because I didn't want to dig out last year's 1040. DH can do it at the point when he e-files. One very important point - don't get the e-pin/AGI wrong. It means that you want to double check that you typed in exactly what the IRS is giving you or asking you for and not guess.
